BOOK 8: MAY THE DEAD FORGIVE
Over the years, Jack McQueen has accumulated enemies, many of them determined to kill him. He steps out of the Queens Hotel in Nanaimo in a dark mood on a rainy night. A lapse of vigilance puts him in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life. After he is discharged, he recovers on the Ranger Tug he’d given to the Shaplow reserve. He is angry. His friends and the RCMP who hire him for consultant work warn him against seeking revenge, but he doesn’t listen. Also, his friend and Officer-in-Charge at the detachment assigns him to the Conservation Authority to catch timber poachers. At first, he feels sidelined and skeptical about trudging around in the woods hunting for petit criminals stealing firewood but comes around to seeing the task as another way to give back to the community and save the environment.
What starts out as a stakeout in the woods leads him and Stacie Machado his part-time lover and business partner, along with his quirky, special-ops, soup-kitchen serving, guitar-busking friend, Norton, toward investigations connected to serious crimes and CFSEU-BC operations.
Jack jeopardizes these major crime investigations. He is warned by the authorities and his friends to back away and let police do their work, but he is obsessed with getting to the root of what he sees as injustice. He doesn’t have time for a lengthy bureaucratic process. The clock is ticking and desperate enemies from the past want to silence him forever.
